This will depend on what you discover during your research. There are many reasons for adjusting your plan. For example, you may find that your topic is too broad and needs to be narrowed, sufficient information resources may not be available, what you learn may not support your thesis, or the size of the project does not fit the requirements. These are the same skills you will need on the job when you write a report or proposal.

Secondary sources are studies by other researchers. By repackaging information, secondary sources make information more accessible. A few examples of secondary sources are books, journal and magazine articles, encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, periodical indexes, and reviews, etc. Primary sources are original works. These sources represent original thinking, report on discoveries, or share new information.

Usually these represent the first formal appearance of original research.

Library collections house a wide variety of materials on many different topics and in many different formats. The challenge in making these things available for the use of library patrons is letting those patrons know what is in the library collection. This is the reason for having a library catalog, and for taking the time to correctly catalog library materials. The library catalog might be compared to the index for a book.

The index provides the reader with a way to find information in the book without having to read every page. The index tells the reader the page on which the information about a specific subject can be found.

Method: This article is an observational case study that chronicles a librarian’s required involvement, skills, and responsibilities in each stage of a real-life systematic review. Main Results: Examining the review process reveals that the librarian’s multiple roles as an expert searcher, organizer, and analyzer form an integral part of the Cochrane Collaboration’s criteria for conducting systematic reviews. Conclusion: Although the librarian’s multiple roles are important in all forms of medical research, they are crucial in a systematic review.

As an expert searcher, the librarian must interact with the investigators to develop the terms required for a comprehensive search strategy in multiple appropriate sources. As an organizer and analyzer, the librarian must effectively manage the articles and document the search, retrieval, and archival processes. Although the systematic review has become a research standard, precious little information in the literature has addressed the searching and bibliographic responsibilities of the librarian on a systematic review team.

The citations included one that described a librarian’s participation in meta-analysis projects [ 1 ] and three that described librarians’ search strategy design [ 2 , 3 ] and filter creation [ 4 ] to identify systematic reviews. While the article by McGowan [ 5 ] in this symposium demonstrates the expert searching skills required by systematic reviews, this article provides an observational case study to chronicle a librarian’s involvement, skills, and responsibilities required in each stage of a real-life systematic review.

These reviews have addressed such diverse topics as treating depression with St. John’s wort [ 6 ], treating acute maxillary sinusitis with antibiotics [ 7 ], managing chronic hypertension during pregnancy [ 8 ], and defining and managing chronic fatigue syndrome [ 9 ]. The reviews have taken an average of a year to a year and a half to complete. To understand the multiple roles of the librarian that are demonstrated during a systematic review, it is necessary to understand why such reviews are undertaken in the first place.

The drawback to narrative reviews is that they are not based on fully systematic and explicit methods for searching the literature: defining inclusion criteria for the identification of relevant articles, critically appraising and abstracting data from selected articles, and interpreting and synthesizing the evidence using meta-analysis.

The Guidelines for Recruiting Academic Librarians have been developed to serve as an outline of the prototypical recruitment process. Librarians may be hired as faculty tenure-track or non-tenure-track appointees, academic appointees, or as administrative or professional staff. The primary objective of these guidelines is to outline the overall recruitment process and serve as a framework for managing librarian recruitments in a strategic, proactive, and consistent manner.

This framework is written to accommodate various appointment types and, accordingly, likely fits none perfectly. Some aspects of these guidelines are more prescriptive while other parts are descriptive. The more prescriptive aspects relate to potentially applicable laws while the more descriptive aspects can be modified to fit institutional and library policy, procedures, and practice.

The primary audiences for these guidelines include library administrators, human resources professionals and staff, and search or screening committees. Libraries of all sizes and types are encouraged to use these guidelines to develop their own local procedures that best fit institutional and library-specific policies, procedures, and practices; staffing models and organizational structures; and applicable laws, regulations, and rules. Candidates may also use these guidelines to inform their understanding of academic library recruitment processes and practices.

It is the responsibility of the senior administration of the library and human resources staff to establish an environment where fair, effective, and transparent searches are possible.
